The branch series is a metaphor that highlights the ways in which trees bend and contort themselves around obstacles and parts of their environment to reach the nutrients they need to keep growing. It is about how two elements interact; merging together, diverging apart, disparate elements bound by a golden thread of intention. The resulting connection is both beautiful and futile, overly controlled, too confining. The act of wrapping these branches is a long and obsessive task, averaging 20 minutes for every 4 inches. The task gives a sense of control in a chaotic world of relating to oneself, others and our environments. The scorched branches are deeply satisfying in their inky blackness, symbolic of the forest’s way of clearing space for new growth. Vine Branch includes an extra element: connecting two branches, respectively scorched and wrapped, with hardened and handmade abaca paper coils. These coils are a looser and less forceful way of connecting, albeit still enduring and unyielding.
